the boundary with the remainder of that Estate situate in Morden.
The southern half, which contains the Surrey County Council's
Smallholdings and higher rated properties, is less densely and less
completely developed.
The district is to a large extent, a dormitory area for London,
yet possesses a core of long established local life concentrated
mostly in the centre. The rapid growth of the last 10 to 15 years
has been almost entirely due to outward pressure from the
metropolis.
Industry and Employment.—There is little local industry
carried on. Most of the workers gain their livelihood outside the
district. The number of employees engaged in factories and workshops
is approximately 670. The following list shows the premises
