The New Health Centre, St. Helier.
The welfare services on the St. Helier Estate, which have been
carried on in temporary premises, have for some time necessarily
been conducted under difficult conditions. Much careful thought
and consideration have been given to plans for the erection of a
new health centre to accommodate both maternity and child
welfare and school medical services, to serve the northern end of
the district and these have now been approved.
The lay-out of the building, which is to be placed on a site at
the junction of Middleton Road and Green Wrythe Lane, is shown
in the accompanying plan. It consists of two wings extending
from a central hall which can be divided by a moveable partition
to form two waiting rooms with separate entrances when two sets
of clinics are being held simultaneously, or can be used in its
entirety for lectures, meetings, etc. One wing is designed primarily
for infant welfare and maternity clinics and the other for dental
and school medical clinics. The former has a comparatively
large weighing room opening on to the ante-room of the doctor's
consulting room. This ante-room can also be converted by
folding cubicles into a dressing room for mothers when the maternity
clinics are held. The cubicles are devised so that women
enter one side and leave by the other, thus ensuring the maximum
degree of privacy. A separate toddlers room is also incorporated.
The dental and school medical side provides a medical consultation
room and the dentist's surgery with a third room, accessible
to both, which can be used either as a treatment room for medical
cases, or as a dental recovery room. There are also the usual
kitchen, food store, records and staff room, lavatories and pram
shelter.
The plan provides for approaches from Middleton Road and
Green Wrythe Lane, from which thoroughfares it will be screened
by a public library which it is proposed to erect on the site, and
by suitably placed shrubs and trees. The building has a flat roof
designed to carry protection against air raid in the form of sand
bags or other suitable material.
