PREFACE
To the Chairman and Members of the
Carshalton Urban District Council.
Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have the honour to present my Annual Report for the year
1937.
The past year was a very good one from a health point of view
and, as indicated by the statistics, compares very favourably with
its predecessors. The death rate was the lowest recorded, infant
mortality was reduced and maternal mortality fell to nil. The
marked fall in the birth rate from 15.7 per thousand population
in the year before to 13.3 is a significant feature of the statistics.
The incidence of infectious disease was much the same as in
the year before, scarlet fever continuing to be prevalent, but in
the mild form characteristic of this infection during the past two
decades.
Sanitary inspection and the administration of the Housing
Acts has continued with unabated vigour, and the same strict
control was exercised over food and food premises.
The successful negotiations with the County Council, which
culminated in the sewering of the Smallholdings, was a noteworthy
hygienic achievement.
