The old defective sewer in East Street was relaid from Church Road to
Hook Boad, a length of about 1,334 feet, during the year, and new sewers
were laid in Wilmerhatch Lane and on the White Horse Estate.
The houses are provided with water-closets, and the drains are
intercepted from the sewers and ventilated.
Frequent examinations of the effluent from the Farm are made by
Dr. Dupre.
Scavenging.—House refuse is removed weekly by the Council's staff,
under the supervision of Mr. Capon, and is consumed in the Meldrum's
Destructor at the Sewage Farm. The heat generated is utilised for working
the pumping, air-compressing, and other machinery at the Farm. The
houses are provided generally with covered movable galvanised-iron ashbins.
