The deaths from Influenza in the five years numbered 15,
representing an average annual death-rate of 0.22 per 1,000 of the
population, as against an average rate of 0.37 for England and Wales
for the same period. A considerable majority of the deaths occurred
among persons above the age of 55 years.
The Isolation Hospital for the District is the Cuddington Joint
Isolation Hospital. In the five years, among the 146 cases of Scarlet
Fever and the 55 cases of Diphtheria, other than the cases at the
Queen Mary's Hospital, which were removed to hospitals of the
Metropolitan Asylums Board, 121 cases of Scarlet Fever and 46 of
Diphtheria were removed to the Cuddington Hospital, and 6 cases of
Scarlet Fever and 2 of Diphtheria were removed to the Wandle Valley
or Tolworth Isolation Hospitals; in the case of each disease, 87 per
cent. of the patients were removed. Two cases of Enteric Fever were
also removed.
After the removal, recovery or death of a patient, the room was
disinfected and bedding and other articles were removed to the Isolation
Hospital and stoved in the Washington Lyons disinfector.
Measles was extensively prevalent, as shown by the notifications
received from the School Teachers, in 1922 and 1924, and Whooping
Cough in each year except 1923. Measles caused 2 deaths and
Whooping Cough 6, all among children under five years of age. The
homes of the children are visited by the School Nurses of the County
Council, and I visited the Schools when the diseases were prevalent
and advised as to precautions.
There are no facilities in the District for the cleansing of
verminous persons or their belongings.
