BOROUGH OF MITCHAM
HEALTH REPORT FOR 1964
To the Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors
London Borough of Merton
This is the last report on the Health of the Borough of
Mitcham which on the 1st April 1965 ceased to exist as a corporate
entity and in association with the Urban District of Merton and
Morden and the Borough of Wimbledon now forms part of the London
Borough of Merton.
This report would normally have been made by Dr.Graham,
Medioal Officer of Health, who resigned his office on 31st March 1965.
I feel sure that all those who have been in any way associated with
Dr. Graham in the past would wish to join me in expressing appreciation
of the service he has rendered the Community since he took office as
Medioal Officer of Health for Mitcham in 1950.
Appreciation is due also to Mr. K.J.Gutteridge, Chief Public
Health Inspector, who retired on March 31st 1965 after nearly twenty-eight
years in that office.
The general health in the Borough during 1964 was good and
there was no special outbreak of infectious disease. In fact, there
were 531 notifications compared with 874 in 1963. The decrease was
mainly due to a fall in measles cases from 770 to 433. It is gratifying
to record that there were no cases of poliomyelitis and only two oases
have occurred sinoe 1957. I have no doubt that poliomyelitis vaocination
has contributed to this satisfactory state of affairs and would advooate
that we should persist in our efforts to vaccinate those at risk against
this dangerous and crippling disease.
59 cases of whooping cough were notified which is about average
for the past seven years. There was no case of diphtheria nor tetanus.
