coming boom-like in October. There was then no seasonal drop, the
demand persisting for both skilled and unskilled workers.
Progress on the Phipps Bridge Estate continues and by the end
of the year a total of 195 dwellings had been completed and occupied.
The three slum clearance areas submitted to the Minister in
1962 were confirmed early in 1963. During the year another nine
areas involving 79 houses were submitted for the Minister's approval.
The Meat Inspection Regulations, 1963, came into force during
the year.
The main provisions are:—
Meat at slaughterhouses must be inspected;
Meat must not be removed from a slaughterhouse until
inspected;
Meat inspected and passed as fit for human consumption must
be marked;
Local authorities may charge for the inspection; and
The minimum period of notice of slaughter is extended from
three hours to 24 hours.
