For skilled engineering and allied occupations there was a
continuing demand, but for others an increase in unemployment rising
towards the end of the year.
Work on the Phipps Bridge Estate is proceeding satisfactorily
and at the end of the year, the first stage comprising 84 dwellings, a
laundry and a boiler house, had been completed and occupied.

Three areas have been inspected with a view to further slum clearance and proposals submitted to the Ministry. Confirmation had not been received at the end of the year.
