Borough of Mitcham
HEALTH REPORT FOR 1960
To the Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors.
Mr. Mayor, Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have much pleasure in submitting my annual report for the
year 1960.
The general health in the Borough has been good and there
was no special outbreak of infectious disease.
The notifications of infectious diseases were 338 compared with
1,000 in 1959. The decrease was mainly due to measles for which
1960 was a year of low incidence.
There were no cases of poliomyelitis and I think it can safely be
said that this is due to the beneficial effect of polio immunisation. The
downward trend for England and Wales has continued for some years
now.
Whooping cough notifications rose to 118 after two years of
very low figures.
The tuberculosis death rate at 0.05 compares with 0.07 per
1,000 population for England and Wales. Notifications were 17
compared with 28 for the previous year. This is the first time that
annual notifications have dropped below 20. Ten years ago there
were more than 100 each year.
Dysentery was notified in 6 cases as against 10 for 1959.
There were no cases of enteric fever.
The birth rate of 14.87 per 1,000 population becomes, after
correction by the comparability factor, 14.42 compared with 17.1
for England and Wales. It is the highest in Mitcham since 1949.
