Although Mitcham is chiefly a working class area, there are few
houses that can be called slums. Under the recent 5-year slum
clearance scheme only 54 houses had to be dealt with. Nearly twothirds
of the houses have been built since 1921 and more than 50 per
cent. of all roads are tree-lined. Apart from a projected scheme at
Phipps Bridge and one or two isolated sites that become vacant there
is no building land available.
