supply nearly met the demand. Women workers were absorbed
without difficulty.
Although Mitcham is chiefly a working class area, there are few
houses that can be called slums and no back-to-back houses. Nearly
two-thirds of the houses have been built since 1921 and more than
50 per cent. of all roads are tree-lined. Apart from a projected
scheme at Phipps Bridge and one or two isolated sites that become
vacant there is no building land available.
