There were three cases during the year, a man and a boy who
had moderate paralysis and a boy who was non-paralytic.
None had been immunised.
Poliomyelitis Vaccination
The scheme for vaccinating children in age groups 1947-1954
with British vaccine was continued during the year, and further age
groups—1955-1956—were also included. Of a total of 2,968 children
who were registered, 2,191 had been vaccinated by the end of 1957.
In December the Ministry of Health decided to extend the
scheme by importing Salk vaccine, and registrations were invited
from children born in 1943-1946 and 1957, expectant mothers, and
the families of certain classes who were likely to be at special risk
such as doctors, ambulance drivers, and nurses.
Vaccination of these groups commenced early in 1958.

There were no cases of enteric fever during the year.
Diarrhcea and Enteritis Under Two Years of Age

not be discovered in any of the cases.
Encephalitis Lethargica
Two cases of post-infectious encephalitis were notified during the
year.
