Types of Accommodation.
It is of note that the Gunsite Camp has been cleared of hutments.
The Nissen huts were built to last only a few years, and do not always
give protection against the weather, although much has been spent
on improvements. The numbers are being steadily reduced.
The Arcon bungalows, however, give very good housing accommodation.
Most of the new development consists of large blocks of flats to
get the greatest number of families rehoused with a limited building
space available.
A housing estate was built outside the borough at Banstead in
conjunction with the neighbouring authorities of Merton and Morden
Urban District Council and the Borough of Sutton and Cheam. One
hundred and eighty-four houses are now occupied.
Attention is being given to the building of bungalows and
cottage flats for elderly couples, 150 up to date; of 74 properties
built in 1956, 45 were cottage flats.
The reduction in total numbers of Council properties from last
year is due to de-requisitioning and demolition of huts.
INSPECTION AND SUPERVISION OF FOOD
Nine hundred and sixteen inspections were made of food premises.
The premises were on the whole satisfactory with some minor
adjustments necessary.
