Infant Mortality.
During the year 17 deaths were registered of infants under
one year of age:—

as compared with 18 deaths last year.

Eleven infants failed to survive the first month of life,
and prematurity was certified as the cause of death of one of
these cases.
Maternal Mortality.
During the year one death was registered as compared with
one in 1952.
Inquests.
Inquests were held on 13 residents dying within the district
and on 10 Mitcham residents who died outside the district, a
total of 23. In addition, post-mortems without inquests were
held on 90 residents dying within the district, and on 70 Mitcham
residents who died outside the district, a total of 160.
