The demand for nursery accommodation showed no sign of
decreasing and there were waiting lists at both of the nurseries
at the end of the year. No further nursery school accommodation
was likely to be available for a considerable time, and the need
for either additional nursery accommodation or an alternative
home minders scheme became increasingly evident.
The combined Home Help and Domestic Help scheme continued
to expand during the year and provide a most appreciated
and useful service, reducing the demand for hospital accommodation.
Woodlands Maternity Home provided most useful additional
accommodation for Mitcham mothers, and was used to capacity.
The housing problem remained the major task of the Sanitary
Inspectors, but shortage of labour and materials caused considerable
delay in the repair of defective premises.
The work of the Public Health Department was displayed at
the Local Government Exhibition held at the Baths Hall during
October, and the opportunity was taken of distributing health
education literature, etc.
I wish to thank the Chairman and members of the Maternity,
Child Welfare and Public Health Committee for their continued
assistance and support, and all the members of the staff for their
loyal help.
I am, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Yours faithfully,
A. ASHWORTH,
Medical Officer of Health.
Public Health Department,
Mitcham Court,
Mitcham.
