SANITARY CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE AREA
WATER SUPPLY
With the exception of eight houses in Goat Road, the whole
of the Borough is supplied by the mains of the Metropolitan
Water Board. The houses in Goat Road are supplied from the
Sutton Water Company. Regular samples of water have been
taken and all have proved satisfactory.
One complaint of a bad taste from water was investigated
and found to be due to the presence of a dead bird in the cistern
under the roof. The cistern was cleaned out and a properly fitting
cover supplied.
In addition to the samples taken from house supplies, the
water supply of seven factories was examined and certificates
given under Section 41, Factory Act, 1937.
RIVERS AND STREAMS
Sixty-four visits have been paid to all works suspected of discharging
effluent into surface water sewers.
CLOSET ACCOMMODATION
With very few exceptions the whole of the district is on the
water carriage system, the houses being drained to the public
sewer. At the end of the year there were three pail closets and
two cesspools in use.
PUBLIC CLEANSING
A weekly collection of house refuse is carried out by direct
labour. Six dust collection vehicles, of modern type, are in use
under the continuous relay system. The refuse is burnt at the
Council's destructor.
SMOKE ABATEMENT
Sixty-seven observations were kept on chimneys during the
year. In connection therewith five notices were served and the
nuisances abated.
