Child Welfare
Child Welfare Sessions are held at six centres, thus serving
every part of the Borough. At the Parish Room and Western
Road Centres two sessions are held each month. At the Cavendish
Road, Meopham Road, Sherwood Park and St. Barnabas
Centres, four sessions are held each month.
The total number of attendances at the six infant welfare
centres was 11,486, as compared with 11,115 in 1936. Of these,
912 were new cases, 635 being infants under one year of age, and
277 being children over one but under five years of age. The
total number of attendances of infants under one year was 7,432,
and of children between one and five years of age, 4,154.
At the end of the year there were 568 infants under one year
and 1,144 children between one and five years of age attending
the centres.
The average attendance at each individual centre was:-
Cavendish Road 54.7
Meopham Road 39.9
Parish Room 65.2
Sherwood Park 41.8
St. Barnabas 70.2
Western Road 57.0
giving an average of 54.8, as compared with 53.3 in 1936.
The percentage of infants under one year of age attending
the centres was 67 per cent, of the total number of notified births.
Clinics for Toddlers
In March it was decided to hold a special clinic for toddlers
once a month. Accordingly, the first clinic for toddlers was held
at the Meopham Road Centre on March 22, the attendance being
17. The following table shows the attendance at this clinic:-
