Small Pox.
One case of small pox has been notified during the year, and
was removed to the Small Pox Hospital, Clandon.
The patient was a man aged 50 years, and was vaccinated in
infancy. The source of the infection could not be traced. The
patient had been away from his place of business for some months
as he was suffering from gout, and, apart from an occasional visit to
a public house or picture palace, he had not been out of his house.
Probably he had come into contact with someone suffering from a
mild unrecognised attack of small pox at one or other of these
public places.
During the year observations have been kept on 59 small pox
contacts ; none contracted the disease.
Having regard to the high incidence of small pox in the
Metropolitan area and the large number of contacts notified as
living in this district, Mitcham seems to have been very fortunate
in having only one case. The modified type of small pox which is
met with in the Metropolitan area apparently has a very low
infectivity.
