Shops
Inspections of shop premises have been carried out under the Shops Act, 1950,
during the year; late evening and week-end inspections have been made to ensure that
the regulations have been complied with. Despite the growth of the large self-service
and multiple stores, the number of small shops in the Borough does not show any
appreciable decrease, but a more rapid change of ownership of these small businesses
does, perhaps, indicate a greater difficulty to make a living in the face of the
competition.
Inspections
1699 shops have been inspected, prescribed notices, records of employment, etc.,
have been examined and all necessary information obtained. An up-to-date register of
shops within the Borough has been maintained. 1882 male assistants, 2178 female
assistants and 189 male and 261 female young persons were employed at the premises
inspected.
