Steam Generating Plant
The establishment is within a Smoke Control Area and the problem of grit and
smoke emission even from a tall stack presented difficulties in view of the close
proximity of four storey blocks of flats.
Once again the pioneering spirit is exhibited when the Council approved the
recommendation to install a Steam Generator as opposed to conventional boiler plant to
serve all heating requirements of the establishment. The generator burning 35 second
gas oil, required only a short stack which cannot be observed from street level.
The advantages of the Steam Generator are considerable and initially they
outweigh those of conventional boiler plant. Prime factors being a high efficiency,
space saving and low capital cost.
Particular regard has also been given to the unsightly emission of flash steam
from vent pipes which also represents a considerable loss of heat and operational costs.
To overcome this, the Baths Department incorporated a condensate cooling battery
through which all condensate passes to give up the excess heat to a calorifier to assist
in the production of hot water.
The installation, together with the ancillary services was installed and
commissioned by the Baths Department maintenance staff under the direction of the General
Manager and was the first generator in England to be installed in the Baths Service.
Insect Pests
The number of bug infestations reported again declined during 1963; with 61 houses
infested as against 89 the previous year.
The greatest numbers of other pests dealt with were beetles - 28 infestations,
and wasps- 19 nests were destroyed.
242 inspections were made of premises prior to the tenant's removal to Council
houses, Disinfestation was required in 16 cases.
