The General Manager, Baths Department (Mr, P.E. Lusher) has provided the following
report upon modernisation work which has recently been undertaken at the Central Baths;
The small swinming pool and entrance foyer have undergone a complete transformation
at a cost of approximately £15,000. Last year the first stage of this scheme was
completed by the removal of dressing cubicles from the poolside and constructing separate
dressing and clothes storage rooms.
The most notable feature of the scheme is the new suspended ceiling works which
entirely conceal the unsightly roof trusses and windows. In the centre and running
the full length of the pool are louvred panels which serve to admit natural lighting,
conceal the fluorescent lighting and floodlights and to afford a foul air exit to
atmosphere. Acoustic tiles form the rest of the ceiling to effect noise absorption
and reduce condensation. The side walls are tiled in light blue relieved by dark
blue piers and the end walls feature abstract designs.
A scum channel replaces the former hand rail and also serves to draw off surface
pollution for return to the filtration plant. The entire pool surround has been
re-laid with non-slip buff tiles.
The floor of the large pool is also being retiled, replacing glazed brick tiles
which had become chipped and dangerous to bathers feet.
The last stage was the modernisation of the entrance to the swimming pools. A
former private baths suite was removed and replaced witha kitchen and buffet. Vending
machines provide refreshments at all times of the day.

Borough at Bromley Road, Tiverton and Mark field Laundrette, Broad Lane.
General Manager of the Baths Department, Mr. P.E. Lusher, has supplied the
following information on the developments in this service during 1963.
Markfield Laundrette
The scheme consists of 12 x 12 lb. dry weight Lister "Atlantic" washing machines
fitted with "Newbery" three formulae process control. Each machine is fitted for
coin and automatic soap solution operation. There are four Broadbent 16" Hydro
Extractors also fitted for coin operation. A full dry service is available by four
Lister "Airflo" gas heated, coin operated Drying Tumblers.
The novel feature of the scheme is the Autobar where vending machines supply a
variety of beverages and refrigerated drinks.
