SANITARY CIRCUMSTANCES FOR THE AREA
Water Supplies
Dr. Windle Taylor, Director of Water Examination, Metropolitan Water Board, has
kindly supplied the following information regarding Tottenham's water supplies.
The supply to the Borough of Tottenham has been satisfactory both in quantity and
quality during 1963.
The Borough is supplied with New River - derived water from Stoke Newington and
Hornsey filtration stations with additional well water fromthe Board's Park well during
the summer months. Summaries of the analytical results of the waters from these
sources are set out on the following page.
There were no changes in the general scheme of supply to the Borough of Tottenham
during 1963. No trunk mains were laid, but new service mains were laid to the extent
of 507 yards.
All repaired and new mains are disinfected with chlorine before being restored or
passed into service and samples of water from them are tested in these laboratories to
ensure that its quality is up to that normally supplied. The water in this area is
not plumbo solvent.
Drainage and Sewerage
There are separate systems of drainage for soil and surface water. Incorrect
connections to the surface water system may give rise to pollution of streams and close
liaison is maintained with the Lee Conservancy Catchment Board's Inspectors so that
action may be taken as soon as possible to deal with any contraventions.
The final transfer of the sewage outfall from the London sewerage system to the
East Middlesex Drainage System was completed on the 10th January, 1964.
Good progress is being made on the Council's flood relief schemes. The
improvement of the Hebourne Ditch has been completed, the Stonebridge Brook Scheme has
reached its last phase, and major work is in hand to enlarge the overflow system from
the old Moselle Brook.
