Tottenham and Wood Green Chest Clinic
Dr. T.A.C. McQuiston makes the following comments on the work of the Chest Clinic
during 1961.
So far as tuberculosis is concerned the pattern of recent years stays at about
the same level in this borough. From the Chest Clinic point of view however, our
work does not diminish with the overall decline in the number of new notifications;
the function of the Chest Unit here has changed considerably in recent years and ray
colleagues and myself find that the chronic bronchitis patient is becoming an ever
increasing problem. During the winter months particularly, the beds in the Chest
Unit were in very great demand and we did, in fact, have quite a waiting list at one
time. The incidence of bronchial carcinoma has, as in many other areas, risen quite
steeply and we work in close co-operation with the Thoracic Surgical Unit at the North
Middlesex Hospital in the prompt diagnosis and treatment of such cases. The recent
nation-wide publicity given to smoking and lung-cancer had its effect here too; we
found that in the month following the Commission's Report, our figures for miniature
X-rays rose quite sharply, although they seem to have resumed their normal pattern
now.
