5. Drainage and Sanitary Conveniences. -The number of water closets to be provided in
a house let in lodgings or occupied by members of more than one family shall be as
follows:-
(1) One water closet for every four habitable rooms
(2) One water closet for every eight persons (irrespective of age)
and the number of water closets provided shall be adequate to meet both the conditions
of (1) and (2) providing that not more than one w.c. shall be required for one family.
The water closets shall be readily accessible to the persons by whom they are intended
for use and adequate provision shall be deemed to have been provided only if at least
one water closet is situated not more than one floor distant from any room or rooms
occupied as a separate dwelling.
6. Facilities for the storage, preparation and cooking food, and for the disposal of
waste water. - Adequate facilities for the storage, preparation and cooking of food
and for the disposal of waste water shall be provided for any room or rooms occupied
as a separate dwelling and such facilities shall include a food store, sink and waste
pipe, water supply and utility services. Such facilities shall not be installed on
any common landing or staircase and the size of the food store shall be adequate having
regard to the number of rooms occupied as a separate dwelling. Where such facilities
and utility services are intended to be used in common by members of more than one
family separate food storage and cooking facilities shall be maintained for each
family.
7. Installations for Space Heating or for the use of Space Heating Appliances.
Within every room used or suitable for use for living and/or sleeping purposes there
shall be provided: -
(1) Adequate fixed space heating convection appliances properly connected
to and served by a suitable hot water or other heat transfer medium;
or
(2) A proper hearth and chimney opening and flue suitable for the reception
of a proper and adequate space heating solid fuel, gas or liquid fuel
appliance, and where the fuel to be used is gas an adequate proper
convenient gas supply; or
(3) Adequate and properly positioned number of electric power points.
The Council may give directions under section 19 of the 1961 Act limiting the
number of individuals who should live in houses in multiple occupation. Locally it
has been decided to adopt the permitted number standard as defined in the Housing Act,
1957 with the proviso that where rooms are used for sleeping only and occupied by
by lodgers of one sex there shall be provided not less than 55 square feet of floor
space per person.
