In May, 1961, the Minister of Housing and Local Government confirmed the Council's
Northumberland Park Nos. 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6 Clearance Areas Compulsory Purchase Order.
Twelve unfit houses were dealt with by individual closing or demolition orders
and 41 were repaired following action under Section 9. In 11 instances it was
necessary to carry out the repairs in the owners* default at a cost of £480. 0. 0.
which was recoverable from the owners concerned.
Certificates of Disrepair
There has been a further reduction during the year in the number of applications
for certificates of disrepair under the Rent Act, 1957.
It is still open to tenants living in rent controlled premises to make an
application, at any time, if the disrepair of the dwelling makes it justifiable but,
many tenants probably are under the impression that applications for certificates of
disrepair could only be made when the rent increase was imposed originally.

Houses in Multiple Occupation
Sections 12 to 23 of the Housing Act, 1961 gives local authorities wider powers to
control houses used for occupation by more than one family. The Minister is empowered
to make management regulations, which the Council may by order apply to houses where
it appears that proper standards are not being maintained.
