Commenting upon the unsatisfactory samples, the Public Control Officer
makes the following observations:-
''Cheese. Two samples of cream cheese were found to be deficient in milk fat;
the traders were cautioned and advised. Two samples of cheese spread obtained
from different traders, but the product of the same manufacturers, were unsatisfactory.
Each was a box of assorted cheese products some of the portions being
incorrectly labelled as to the type of cheese and the ingredients of which it was
composed. An official caution was sent to the manufacturers who took immediate
steps suitably to amend all the stocks of this pack of cheese which they held.
"Cooked Meat. A sample of atin of cooked meat described on the label as "Chopped
Ham and Pork" was found to contain an appreciable proportion of cereal filler and
the correct description for this product should have been "Luncheon Meat*. The
manufacturers agreed to correct the labelling of this product.
"Fruit. A retailer sold and exposed for sale Buerre Hardy pears as William pears.
The trader was prosecuted and was fined a total of £6.0s.0d. and ordered to pay
£2.2s. 0d. costs.
"Meat and Meat Products. A firm of retail butchers sold as "Steak and Kidney" a
mixture consisting of meat and ox liver. They were prosecuted and fined £3.0s.0d.
together with £2.2s.0d. costs.
"Non-Brewed Condiment. Two samples of this food were obtained from the same
retailer and each was slightly deficient in acetic acid. Pull enquiries were made
but it proved impossible to establish whether the cause was due to a fault of the
retailer or the manufacturer, and since the deficiencies were only slight, no further
action was taken.
"Vinegar. A sample of vinegar was purchased from each of two retailers, but the
articles were found to be non-brewed condiment. A follow-up sample was obtained
in each case and as each of these was found to be satisfactory, no further action
was taken. Samples of vinegar were also obtained from two other retailers and
both of these, and also the follow-up samples which were taken in each case, were
found to be non-brewed condiment. An official caution was sent to both these
traders.
"Miscellaneous. A sample of soup described as "Mushroom Cream Soup" was found,
when made up in accordance with the manufacturer's directions, to contain less
than the minimum fat which must be present in a soup described as "cream soup".
An official caution was sent to the manufacturers concerned."
The Public Control Officer has also furnished the following report upon
associated work under other Acts:-
