Legal Proceedings Public Health Act, 1936, Section 172
For the first time in Tottenham, it was necessary to apply to the Magistrates'
Court for an order under section 172 of the Public Health Act, 1936 requiring the
removal to hospital of an infectious patient. The patient, a girl aged 17 years,
was suffering from acute extensive pulmonary tuberculosis and sharing a bedroom
with four other people two of whom were twins aged 10 years. The Chest Clinic
were unable to get any co-operation from the family.
After the removal of the patient to hospital the remainder of the family were
persuaded to attend for examination at the Chest Clinic, and three sisters were
found to be infected and were admitted to hospital.
The original case in the family was the father who had discharged himself
from hospital and up to this time refused further treatment. He was also persuaded
to return to hospital.
