another resident in the street having had an attack of jaundice
some months previously.
This disease is primarily a disease of rats and the organism
is found in their excreta. Rats were reported in the locality
in which the first case and the suspect case occurred but no signs
of recent infestation were found nor were baits taken. One rat
however was eventually trapped in the vicinity but was not found
to be infected with the disease.
The two other cases would appear to have been associated with
water contaminated by infected rats.
The first patient was thought to have contracted the disease
while fishing in some disused gravel pits. The second patient
worked at a wharf on the River Lee and was in the habit of bathing
frequently in the river during the hot weather which prevailed at
that time.
