20 Preliminary Notices were served for contraventions, and 5
Statutory Notices were served. In one instance, legal proceedings
were instituted, but the case was adjourned on the owner's undertaking
to carry out remedial works.
Swimming Baths.
The Council possess two indoor Swimming Baths and one open-air
bathing pool.
Though the weather conditions were not conducive to creating a
record year of bathing attendances, it is pleasing to report that a record
week was created at the Open Air Pool.
During the period July 31st to August 6th, 1938, there were 18,752
bathers and 3,820 spectators, as compared with the previous record week
of 16,624 bathers and 3,478 spectators. The establishing of this record
proves without doubt that provided the weather is suitable there is a
demand for Open Air Bathing.
The following are the attendances of bathers during the year ended
March 31st, 1939:—
Open Air .Pool 88,586
Indoor Baths 130,636
The Filtration and Sterilisation Plants continue to prove satisfactory,
a good standard of water being maintained throughout the
season.
Samples of the baths water were taken periodically for submission
to chemical and bacteriological analysis, and the results proved that
the water conformed to the recognised standard of purity for swimming
bath waters.
Eradication of the Bed Bug.
The total number of houses disinfested during the year was 475;
of this number, 17 were found to be re-infested on re-inspection three
months after disinfestation.
