This aspect of Maternity and Child Welfare work has proved its
usefulness in several ways. Many girls later, when married, have brought
their children to the Welfare Centres. Also several have applied to the
Maternity and Child Welfare Department for advice as to how to become
Health Visitors, State Registered Nurses or Nursery Nurses, etc.
EVACUATION OF EXPECTANT MOTHERS AND
CHILDREN UNDER FIVE YEARS OF AGE.
The Government scheme for the evacuation of certain classes of
the population in the event of emergency from vulnerable areas to
reception areas outside the immediate danger zone obviously requires
for its success a unification of control and a correlation of the functions
of the various departments concerned in the scheme.
It has been recognised, however, that the evacuation of expectant
mothers and children under five is a problem presenting certain features
which call for individual consideration. For instance, special arrangements
for the evacuation, by ambulances, of expectant mothers will
have to be made. Further, the ascertainment of the necessary information
in regard to expectant mothers and children under five years can only
be carried out adequately through the machinery of the Maternity and
Child Welfare Department by utilising the services of Health Visitors
who will also, it is presumed, accompany children under five to the areas
receiving them.
The problem is, therefore, one which is intimately bound up with
the work of the health services and this should be borne in mind in any
scheme of co-ordination and control.
