Under the very expert guidance of the leader, Mrs. Robson, excellent
progress has been made. Each member's history is known to the leader,
who advises on the suitability of the work in each case. So detailed is
the knowledge of the leader concerning the members that during the
year several attending the class have been advised to go to the Clinic
for examination and have received treatment.
With the combined efforts of all those concerned the basis of this
class is very definitely the promotion and maintenance of health. The
social side is well established also; friends are made and the atmosphere
is a very happy one.
As this class is almost unique in being under the guidance of the
Maternity and Child Welfare Committee, many other organisations and
societies have asked for information regarding it.
SEWING CLASSES AND CLUBS.
The sewing and knitting classes were established in 1912. They
were inaugurated by a small voluntary committee which laid the
foundations of the Maternity and Child Welfare work in Tottenham.
Several of the original members still attend regularly. During the
intervening years these mothers have kept in constant touch with the
Welfare Centres, first with their own children and later with their grandchildren.
Many of them were also members of the first "Keep-Fit"
class for mothers held in this area.
The social side of the Maternity and Child Welfare work, enlisting,
as it does, the active co-operation of the mothers, forms an important
link with the health services proper and fulfils a function of real value
to the community.
The sewing classes are held at The Chestnuts and Lordship Lane
Centres every week during the winter months. One session every month
is of a purely social character.
The number of classes held at The Chestnuts and Lordship Lane
Centres during 1938 was 76. At each class a Health talk or a lesson in
First Aid was given.
A number of social functions were held including a visit to the sea
and another to the theatre.
