The figures of attendances at the new Lordship Lane Centre, and the
Chestnuts, St. Ann's Road, are given in the above table.
I am indebted to Miss Esther Rickards, M.S.. F.R.C.S., Medical
Officer in charge of the Committee's ante-natal work, for the following
report:—
During 1938 there has been a steady growth in the work of the
maternity section. Three sessions were held weekly at both clinics.
At the Chestnuts 2,725 attendances were made, which included
525 new cases, and 190 post-natal cases, an average of 18 per session
over the year's working. At Lordship Lane 2,789 attendances were
made, which included 587 new cases and 183 post-natal cases, with an
average of 18.3 per session.
During the year 1,396 individual ante-natal patients were seen at
the clinics representing 53.3 per cent, of the maternal population as
•compared with 1,144 patients or 41.1 per cent, in 1937. There has also
been an increase in the post-natal cases from 229 in 1937 to 373 in 1938.
It will be seen from these figures that the service is working at full
pressure, exceeding the Ministry of Health's estimate of 16 cases per
session. This is an important factor to bear in mind when new schemes
such as the dental service are launched, for much time and energy must
be spent with each woman to persuade her to use all the services available.
