FOLLOWING-UP.
Review of the arrangements for the following-up of children suffering
from physical defects, including a summary of the work undertaken by School
Nurses:—
One of the school doctors pays periodical visits to children who wear
surgical appliances, towards the cost of which the Education Committee
have contributed. A link is thus established between the hospital or
other institution prescribing the instrument and the patient, whereby
attendance at the hospital can be ensured as circumstances require and
repairs effected immediately they appear necessary.
Weekly returns from, the schools are received by the School Medical
Officer showing absences of the children from infectious or contagious
piseases. The school nurses follow-up in the homes the children thus
notified.
Children excluded from school on the recommendation of the school
medical officers are likewise followed-up by the school nurses when they
fail in their regular attendance at the appropriate clinic.
The attendance officers inform the medical department of absences
from school for apparently inadequate reasons and suitable measures are
taken.
The school nurses gave 106 baths to 41 children suffering from scabies.
They paid 5,135 home visits, made 686 attendances at clinics and 417
school attendances for purposes of medical inspection.
The other work undertaken by the school nurses is set out in tabular
form on page 46, Table VI.
