A booklet circularised amongst school children and obtainable also
by other members of the public at the Libraries drew special notice to
the importance of cleanliness, exercise and the care of the teeth. The
booklet was designed for school children mainly, and was attractively
compiled.
Essays were written by the children upon the matters discussed in the
booklets and dilated upon in school. Successful competitors were awarded
prizes, which were presented at a public function. School children
provided the entertainment, under the direction of their teachers.
A Committee of Teachers compiled the booklet, so that Health Week
was in every respect educational.
MEDICAL EXAMINATIONS.
In 1935, 92 examinations were made of persons entering the permanent
service of the Council, the Education Committee and the Maternity and
Child Welfare Committee.
SANITARY CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE BOROUGH.
WATER.
The water supply is satisfactory in quality and quantity. It is
obtained from the Metropolitan Water Board's mains.
DRAINAGE AND SEWERAGE.
There are still certain areas in the older parts of Tottenham drained
on the single pipe system. Substantial progress is being made in converting
the single drain system to the dual system as instances of the
former come to light either by deliberate investigation or in the course
of house inspection. A sum of money is allocated for the purpose yearly.
RIVERS AND STREAMS.
The Lee Conservancy Catchment Board are responsible for the
cleansing of streams in the area and (jointly with the Lee Conservancy
Board) the River Lee.
