OTHER INSPECTIONS.
In addition to the inspections mentioned in the preceding paragraphs,
the sanitary inspectors have carried out the following work:—
Inspections of public house urinals 188
,, stables 292
,, common lodging houses and sublet
houses 132
,, pawnbrokers' premises 6
,, brooks 4
,, schools 10
602 appointments have been kept with owners, builders, etc.,
relative to notices.
One common lodging house which was not kept in accordance with
the byelaws was closed during the year.
Representations were made during the year to the Managers of a
non-provided school that the water closet and urinal accommodation was
not satisfactory, and they are now considering the question of reconstruction.
SMOKE ABATEMENT.
From time to time complaint is received of the issue of black smoke
from factory chimneys. The sanitary inspectors keep periodical observations
upon them, and it has not been found necessary to take legal action
in respect of contravention of the Council's byelaws. The factory owners
have been found amenable to reasonable suggestions, and have co-operated
to mitigate annoyance.
SCHOOLS.
The water supply to schools is the same as for the rest of the district
—namely from the Metropolitan Water Board's mains. The schools are
maintained in a satisfactory sanitary condition.
