No action was taken during 1934 under Sections 19, 20 and 21 of
the Housing Act, 1930.
BUG INFESTATION OF HOUSES.
A full year's experience has been gained in carrying out this work,
and during 1934:—
285 rooms in 140 houses were disinfested;
8½ cwt. of sulphur, equivalent to 3.3 lbs. per room, were used.
In 85 per cent. of the premises the disinfestation appears to have
been completely effective.
One of the difficulties in dealing with this problem is the reluctance
of the people whose houses are infested with bugs to admit the fact. No
class of the population is exempt from this scourge, and when a house
becomes infested it is with the utmost difficulty that the unaided householder
can rid the house of bugs completely. By the vigorous methods
employed by the Council's staff, there is a reasonable prospect of premises
being effectually cleared of these pests.
