SOCIAL CONDITIONS OF THE AREA.
The social conditions of the area have not altered during the past
year.
Population.
The 1921 census population was returned by the Registrar-General
at 146,711.
The figure furnished by the Treasurer for 1926 is 159,500, and it is
upon the Treasurer's estimate that the vital statistics have been calculated,
as in previous years.
The declension in the Birth Rate has the effect of causing the population
as a whole to become more aged. The meaning of this expression
is seen by a comparison of the percentage Census figures for 1911 and 1921.
It will be seen by reference to the accompanying Table that the percentages
of persons over the age of 35 in 1921 exceed those in 1911, and that the
percentages of persons under that age, with the exception of the 10 to 20
gears' group, were materially reduced at the last Census.
