B.C.G. Vaccination. There were no changes in the scheme introduced in 1956 whereby
vaccination against tuberculosis is offered to school leavers, that is children of 13
years and over.
Before vaccination is given a simple skin test is performed, as some children
will already have been exposed to the disease and have subsequently developed an immunity.
In these instances the skin test is positive and arrangements are made for these children
to have a chest x-ray to ensure that the previous exposure to tuberculosis has not resulted
in active disease.
The following table shows the results of visits to schools

AMBULANCE SERVICE
The Service continues to operate from the Ambulance Depot at Salmen Road, Plaistow,
E.13. The graphs on the opposite page illustrate the work carried out by the Service
during the year. Although the number of patients carried in 1959 remains approximately
the same as for 1958, the upward trend which has become so pronounced over the last ten
years is still continuing. Continuous efforts are being made under the directions of the
Ambulance Officer to increase the operational efficiency of the Service, and in this respect
It is Interesting to note from the graphs that the mileage has remained fairly steady in
spite of the upward trend in the number of patients, and in fact the average vehicle
mileage per patient carried is continuing to decrease.
The Service continues to receive excellent co-operation from the Fire Brigade and
the Borough Engineer's Department.
