Lunacy and Mental Treatment Acts.
Work undertaken by the Mental Health Officers.
There is no change in the arrangements for obtaining the services of the Mental
Health Officers. A twenty-four hour rota system was in operation and calls for their
services after office hours continued to be made through Ambulance Control.
During the year, the Mental Health Officers carried out the following work and
visits in connection with these Acts:-
1. Calls received in connection with mental illness numbered 324 and were from:-
(a) General Practitioners 183
(b) (i) Goodmayes Mental Hospital 48
(ii) General Hospitals 16
(c) Other Agencies (police, relatives, etc.) 77
The total number of visits made to these cases was 581.
Disposal of Cases.
Two-hundred and fifty-three were admitted to hospital:-

(a) As voluntary patients 60 101 l6l
(b) As temporary patients 5 13 l8
(c) Under Urgency Orders 13 23 36
(d) Under Summary Reception Orders 5 5 10
(e) For observation 9 19 28
These were admitted to the following hospitals

St.Clement's (observation ward) 22

It will be noted that 30 of these admissions were of persons aged 75 years or
over, with a total of 53 for persons aged 65 and over.
