the proportion of deaths between the ages of 65 and 75 years,
and that after the age of 75 years the proportion was nearly
doubled. The table also reflects indirectly the fact that the population
is gradually becoming older, and that relatively there are
more persons who must succumb at the later ages.
Secular changes in the death rate. The death rates of both
sexes for the years 1876—1910 are given in Table XIX(a), and in
Table XIX(b) full details of deaths and death rates by sexes are set
out for 1911 and subsequent years. The highest death rate in
the records is that for 1885, viz. 22.0 per 1,000 living, and the
