treatment of this type of case, which is often admitted to the large
voluntary hospitals. Apart from this feature, the major emphasis
in the table is on non-tuberculous diseases of the respiratory tract,
and on diseases of the digestive, nervous, and genito-urinary
systems respectively.
Deaths.
The number of deaths which occurred in the hospital
was 1,592. This was an increase of 90 over the number for the
previous year, viz. 1,502. The number of deaths which occurred
within twenty-four hours of admission was 251, and a further 148
took place within the second twenty-four hours after admission.
The corresponding figures for 1936 were 211 and 111.
Table V shows the age groups in which deaths occurred
in the seven years since the transfer of the hospital.
