The average duration of residence of all the cases was 38.08
days.
Diphtheria.
The number of cases admitted during the year, notified as
diphtheria, was 576. The diagnosis was amended after admission
in 107 of these cases, or 18.58 per cent. of the admissions.
At the beginning of the year 128 patients were in residence,
and the total number under treatment was 597. Of these, 501
were discharged, 14 died, and 82 remained under treatment at the
end of the year. The average duration of residence was 60.5
days.
Corrected diagnosis:—The 107 cases which proved to be
wrongly diagnosed were found after admission to be suffering
from the following complaints:—Tonsillitis 63, laryngitis 12,
measles 9, scarlet fever 4, stomatitis 3, Vincent's angina 3,
quinsy 3, br. pneumonia 4, rhinitis 2 septic wound 1, no disease 3.

The faucial cases are again classified according to severity,
as follows:—
Mild 179 cases, or 44.53 per cent.
Moderate 126 „ „ 31.34 „
Severe 97 „ „ 24.13 „
Paralysis. Post-dipththeritic paralysis occurred in 43 of the
above cases. It was mild in 27 cases and severe in 16 cases.
