Microscopical and Bacteriological Examinations.
Forty-seven samples of milk were taken for bacteriological
and microscopical examinations. Twenty-seven of these were
obtained from Council's Schools for the purpose of bacteriological
examination, all of which proved satisfactory. Twenty samples
were taken from purveyors (churns, hand-cans, and bottles for
microscopical examination. Of this number five were unsatisfactorily
reported upon, owing to the presence of Coliform Bacillus.
Letters of caution were sent in each case, and the premises
visited.
Public Health (Preservatives, etc., in Food) Regulations.
Eight samples of various foods were reported upon as being
adulterated with preservatives, as under:—
Meat: Containing sulphur di-oxide. Unofficial.

Subsequent official sample proved satisfactory.

MILK (SPECIAL DESIGNATIONS) ORDER, 1923.
The following licences were granted during the year:—
Eleven to sell Grade "A" (Tuberculin Tested) Milk including
six supplementary licences; three to sell Certified; one to produce,
bottle and sell, and eight to sell Grade "A" Milk, including four
supplementary licences; one to pasteurize and sell, and fourteen
to sell Pasteurized Milk, including twelve supplementary licences.
One hundred and eighteen samples were submitted for bacteriological
examination, the results being as follows:—
Pasteurised Milk—
Satisfactory 53
Unsatisfactory Nil
Grade "A" Milik—
Satisfactory 32
Unsatisfactory 12 (contained Coliform Bacillus in
100th c.c.
Eight of the unsatisfactory samples were taken on delivery
at one of the Council's Institutions, and the source of supply was
stopped.
