AREA AND POPULATION
Population tables are again reproduced in some detail.
Although not necessarily up-to-date they contain the most recent
information available for the Borough and it was felt appropriate to
include them in their present form to provide readily accessible
information and for purposes of comparison in subsequent reports.
Care should be exercised in comparing one table with another to
differentiate between Census figures and Registrar General's estimates.
It will be noted that between the 1951 and 1961 Census
there was a decline of 7056 in total population of the area, an average
of approximately 700 persons per year. Subsequent annual average figures
between 1961 and 1965 based on Registrar General's estimated mid-year
figures show a diminished rate of reduction at approximately 650 persons
per year. 1 in 8 of the population was aged 65 years or over at the
1961 Census.
