Sample No.Article SampledType of InfringementAction Taken
3373 (Informal)Pure Lemon Juice (Calif ornian)This article was submitted for examination at the request of a resident who complained it contained dark specks. The Public Analyst reported that the article contained dissolved tin to the extent of 60 p.p.m. and was unfit for saleThe Californian Canners stated that the can had been filled over 18 months ago and that the deterioration shown by the condition of the can was greater than normal, probably due to poor storage conditions A further check sample taken proved to be satisfactory.
3384 (Informal)Minced Beef with onion and gravyThis article contained only 41 per cent of meat,, whereas in the opinion of the Public Analyst it should contain not less than 50 per cent of meatThe manufacterer wrote stating that the meat content of this article had recently been raised to 50 per cent.
3394 (Informal)Orange Nectar sweetenedThe Public Analyst reported that this article consisted of orange juice and crushed orange diluted with water and with sugar and citric • acid added He was of the opinion that it was misleading to describe this article as "Pure Orange Juice and crushed orange" without any indication that it was diluted with water. The importers submitted an amended label from the Spanish canners which was better than the former one, but still not free from criticism. Negotiations are still proceeding and had not been concluded at the year end.

. Sampling Observations
It will be' seen from the detailed classification that of the two hundred
and twenty three samples taken during the year the Public Analyst reported
five labelling infringements (2.24 per cent) and four samples for other
types of irregularities (1.79 per cent) a total of 9 (4.03 per cent).
The pattern of sampling has followed that of previous years in that a
wide range and variety of articles have been selected for analysis and it
is worthy of mention that the infringements found were on the whole of a
minor character and amicably settled without recourse to legal proceedings.
