A Kitchen at the W.V.S premises. 18 Grove Road Sutton was being
re-equipped at the end of the year and will be run by the W.V.S for the
Old People's Welfare Committee, and will enable the number of meals on
wheels to be doubled It is hoped it will come into operation early in 1954.
Section 60 (Burial ar,d Cremation of the Dead)
Three burials were arranged under the powers granted to the Council
by this Section.
MORTUARY
During 1963, two hundred and fifteen bodies were admitted and
underwent post mortem examination Seventy six of the bodies were
admitted from hospitals and sixteen from other local authority areas.
Difficulties in staffing the Mortuary, reported in 1962, increased, and
it was decided to appoint a full time attendant who took up his duties
early in August. The appointment has proved very beneficial, and the
conditions and standard maintained at our new Mortuary must be as high as
any to be found in the country. The most desirable improvement still
awaited is the provision of a house near to the Mortuary for the attendant
LABORATORIES
The Public Health Laboratory, Epsom, served the Borough for
bacteriological examinations. This service is supplemented by the use of
the laboratories at Sutton and Cheam Hospital and St. Helier Hospital
Approximately nine hundred and seventy nine specimens connected
with infectious diseases were submitted to the laboratories during the year
CLINICS
Details of the clinics available in the district are given at the end of
this report (Pages 59 and 60).
SANITARY CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE AREA
Water Supply. The water supply is mainly derived from the deep wells
in the chalk of the Sutton District Water Company situated at Sutton, Cheam
and Woodmansterne. A small area in the North Ward is supplied by the
Metropolitan Water Board
The water from all the wells of the Sutton District Water Company is
softened to under nine degrees of hardness A high dose of chlorine in the
form of chloramine is administered to the water as a protective measure.
Most of it is removed later, leaving a small residual chloramine to pass
out to public distribution The water is not liable to be plumbo-solvent.
The fluoride content is reported to be less than 0 1 part per million.
