(v) Home Safety
During 1963 nine people died in the Borough following accidents in
the home In addition, one hundred and nineteen people were removed to
hospital by Surrey County Council Ambulances following home accidents
fifty seven following falls thirty four suffering from poisoning, seven
following burns and scalds, eleven suffering from cuts one child suffering
from choking and nine following other types of home accidents
The Sutton and Cheam Home Safety Committee was very active during
the year under the lead of its President, Alderman Mrs D. Sparks M.B.E
new Chairman,. Mr. H. Halls, and Secretary Mrs. I.L Ashmore, 243 Brighton
Road, Belmont (Tel Vigilant 5474).
In February the Committee invited the Home Safety Committees of
neighbouring authorities in Surrey to an informal Home Safety Conference,
which proved so successful and enjoyable that it is likely robe repeated
next year with another authority acting as host.
The highlight of the year was the provision and manning of a Home
Safety stall in the Civic Exhibition in the Public Halls in May. The stall,
besides its various interesting displays and teaching aids, distributed
leaflets on all aspects of Home Safety. Crossword puzzle competitions were
run. Many questions from the public were answered and altogether the stall
was useful in publicising the Committee's existence and work
Speakers were provided to interested organisations and groups, and
posters, leaflets, etc were distributed on many aspects of Home Safety
Towards the end of the year arrangements were started to meet our
counterparts in the other divisions of Borough 21, with a view to
considering the form of future integration and co-ordination. This had
already been started by close co-operation in assisting at each other's
exhibitions
The local Press co-operated well in giving publicity to the work of the
Committee and in publishing local Home Accident figures when available
Special Home Safety notices or slogans were inserted in two local papers
monthly during the first four months of the year following on a preChristmas
insertion in December 1962
MEDICAL EXAMINATIONS
One hundred and twenty seven medical examinations of staff were
undertaken during the year, consisting of one hundred and nine for
superannuation purposes and eighteen sick pay cases for reports to the
Establishment Committee.
