Mortality The principal causes of death were diseases of the heart
and circulation, 51.9 per cent cancer, 17.7 per cent., and pneumonia and
bronchitis, 14.8 per cent.
Deaths from coronary disease were approximately 3.3 per cent. down
from last year's figure. Deaths from accidents numbered twenty eight, of
which twelve were due to motor vehicle accidents, and nine to home
accidents.
Deaths from cancer of the lung numbered forty one, a reduction of
eight from the previous year, which was the highest ever. This is about
average for the previous five years.

Maternal Mortality. There were two maternal deaths.
Infantile Mortality. There were twenty one deaths of infants under one
year in 1963 (19 in 1962), all legitimate. The infantile mortality rate was
17.0 per thousand live births, compared with 20.9 per thousand live births
for England and Wales.

Of the twenty one deaths, sixteen occurred in the

neo-natal period within one month ot birth, thirteen being within the first week, as shown in the following table.

NEW LEGISLATION
(A) Offices, Shops and Railway Premises Act, 1963
An Act to make fresh provision for securing the health, safety and
welfare of persons employed to work in office or shop premises and provision
for securing the health, safety and welfare of persons employed to work in
certain railway premises; to amend certain provisions of the Factories Act
1961 and for purposes connected with the matters aforesaid.
The Act is due to come into operation during 1964.
