Mortality.- The principal causes of death were diseases of the heart
and circulation, 54.4 per cent. (as against 56.0 per cent. in 1961) and
cancer, 17 9 per cent (as against 20.3 per cent. in 1961).
Deaths from cancer of the lung increased from forty four in 1961 to
forty nine in 1962.
Deaths from coronary disease were approximately 10 per cent. down
from last year's high figure. Deaths from accidents numbered twenty nine,
as against eighteen in 1961, of which seven were due to motor vehicle
accidents, as against six in 1961. There were fourteen deaths from suicide,
the same as in 1961.

Maternal Mortality. There was no maternal death.
Infantile Mortality. There were nineteen deaths of infants under one
year in 1962 (seventeen in 1961). Of these, sixteen were legitimate
infants and three illegitimate infants. The infantile mortality rate was
16.2 per thousand live births, compared with 20.7 per thousand live births
for England and Wales. Of the nineteen deaths., twelve occurred in the neonatal
period within one month of birth, ten being within the first week, as
is shown in the following table of causes and age groups.

( 1) Housing Act, 1961
The Housing (Management of Houses in Multiple Occupation)
Regulations, 1962, made under section 13 of the above Act, came into
operation on the 22nd May, 1962.
