TUBERCULOSIS
On the 31st December, 1962, there were on the register six hundred
and forty eight cases of tuberculosis, of whom five hundred and eighty eight
were pulmonary and sixty non-pulmonary
In 1962 there was one death from pulmonary tuberculosis, as in 1961.
The death rate was 0.013 per thousand of population, as in 1961. There
was no death from non-pulmonary tuberculosis, the same as in 1961. For
England and Wales the death rate for pulmonary tuberculosis was 0.059
per.thousand of population and for non-pulmanary tuberculosis 0.007 per
thousand of population.
The number of new cases pulmonary tuberculosis was fourteen,
compared with twenty nine in 1961 and nineteen in I960. Residual foci
of infection still persist, particularly among the middle aged and elderly,
and intensive search will be necessary to eliminate the disease. The use
of B.C.G. vaccine in adolescent children gives a high measure of protection.
Five hundred and thirty two children received injections in 1962, and twenty
four children were found to be Mantoux positive. The response rate in the
thirteen, year age group was 71.1 per cent.
Five new cases of non- rpulmonary tuberculosis were notified in 1962,
compared, with one in 1961 and six in I960.

continued to provide valuable assistance to patients and their families
throughout the year. Theassistance.given is now almost equally divided
between tuberculosis cases and chronic, bronchitis dnd other chronic chest

where necessary. Grants were made to,provide occupational therapy, and
